Graduated from East Texas State University in 1979. Photo instructor: Nolan Bailey. Classmates and up down one year: Jimmy Cammack, Rufus O. Lovett, Mark Worden, Jay Brousseau, Matthew Savins, Dennis Murphy, Mark Seliger and so may others and they are best shooters in Texas and beyond.
In 1986 while living in a one-room hut (my darkroom) down a steep hill and on the end of a dead-end street secluded with leafy trees where no one could find me someone did. A knock at the door. In essence what this person (Katherine Keating) was proposing was "we want to print ALL your music portraits and take them on tour for a year. I remember saying "all of them? That's 326 portraits!"
This sponsor was Shiner Beer. My beer! They were fantastic people to work with and kept their promises. They printed every portrait and we all went on tour for a year. And then Shiner suggested we donate all the prints to the Barker History Center at UT and I agreed.
Permission to publish any of these images must be obtained from the photographer.
Music portraits from Austin, Texas
The portraits on this site are the result of me becoming addicted to the Austin Music Scene starting in 1984. "I couldn't help myself!"
Back in the day shows started at 10 PM not 6:30 PM like now. For many musicians sacrifices were made. Work all day and then somehow play music at night. I wanted to help out so I began a photo documentary. I criss-crossed Austin looking for talent.
